About Our Group

When we were young gardeners, our days would quickly melt into nights as we amended, weeded, plotted, planned, and planted our gardens. Aches and pains could be soothed soaking in a hot tub at night followed by restful sleep that allowed us to repeat the process again the next day. We dreamed of more plants and more land – there would never be enough. It was a way of life that we would never dream of leaving behind.

We are now all at least sixty years old - a group of passionate gardeners with a more realistic approach to our gardening. We do not want to let it all go, but we feel the need to get it under control. Our bodies do not heal overnight. We take breaks and quit before dark. As a group, we share our experiences, learn from each other, and provide mutual support and encouragement to continue to enjoy gardening through our golden years.

Membership is limited at our monthly meetings. Those on our waiting list can visit this site and keep up with our group discussions. This Blog will continue to be refined over time – just like us!

A Beautiful Day For Visiting Nurseries

After a week of cool, wet weather Mother Nature smiled on us, parting the clouds and allowing us to bathe in the warmth of a sunny day in late May for our nursery tour in the Salem area. Both of these nurseries have websites:
Sebright http://www.sebrightgardens.com/
Tiny Treasures http://www.tinytreasuresnursery.com/index.html

Our first stop was at Sebright. Right away, there was a flurry of activity in the hoop house as plant selections were made. When the dust had settled, we gathered together for an educational and fun tour of the display garden. Thomas is a wealth of information and always willing to share his plant expertise with visitors. It is clearly evident that he is continually searching for and finding new plants to add to his ever growing and changing garden. Here are just a few of the highlights of our day.

Hostas, ferns, saxifrages, and epimediums coexist in harmony in a shady area.

Peonies and daylilies join an array of trees, shrubs and other sun loving perennials in this perfect place for basking and enjoying life in the warmth of a brightly lit day.

Sweeping beds stuffed with copious plantings surround a large expanse of green while winding pathways invite visitors to see what lies just around a bend........

........to discover jurassic appearing plants that seem to have been transported into the present.

Another turn reveals
a tree of gold shining above a lush bed of hostas that seem to be catching the glow and reflecting it forward.

Many turns and bends in the pathway led us back to the gazebo where we refueled our bodies and bid a fond farewell as we headed to our next destination of the day.

Tiny Treasures Nursery is a fairly new venture for Troy Youngblood and currently is only internet based with mail order delivery. We were invited to visit the display garden at the family owned wholesale nursery a short distance from Sebright. Troy had a special selection of plants available for us to purchase at the site. Not only were we able to buy at discounted prices, but he was kind enough to give each of us a free plant of Daphne jasminea. I was a bit derelict in my photo taking here because I was immersed in conversation and plant lust. I did get shots of the display garden and this one of our hosts before leaving.
Our welcoming committee ready to help us make selections and to answer our questions. Troy is on the left.

It was nice to be see what the plants will grow up to be and..

have everything labeled for easy identification
